Face Shop/4U2/PAC Haul

Posted by: somethinguncontrived on: January 29, 2009

***this entry first appeared in my personal journal because I thought I wouldn’t be coming back to this one.  Well, obviously I changed my mind.  So enjoy.  I hope I get to do this more often (write in this journal shiznit, I mean)

How shall I put this gently..?

I SHOPPED. :-)
Hehehe…

Last week I got these:

The Face Shop Phytogenic Powder Foundation SPF 29 in Sand Beige

The Face Shop Span Oil Control Pre Make Up (in other words, it’s a primer, folks!)

A swatch is in order:

Left:  Phytogenic Powder Foundation in Sand Beige
Right:  Span Oil Control Pre Makeup

no flash, under fluorescent lighting, foundation swiped twice.

I like them. I’ve been wearing them both everyday.  They’re supposed to be for my supplies, but what the heck.  I’ll just buy another batch. I’m keeping this. HAHAHA.  The Span primer is great.  It feels like a cross between the Smashbox primer and The Face Shop pore concealer.  Loves it.
And then last night I got some more stuff:

Crappy lighting sucks
I shall do swatches at a later date. But for the curious:
PAC Matte Eyeshadows:
-dark brown
-light brown
-peach
-white

*for contour/highlight work

4U2 Liquid Eyeliner
-
blue
-green

4U2 Lipgloss Xpress
- #07
-# 17

4U2 Glitz Shimmer Eyeshadow Duo
-#03

Max Factor Pan Stick Foundation
-
Cool Bronze

For one thing, if you haven’t tried the eyeshadows and lip glosses from 4U2, then you should because it’s totally a steal.  I plan on getting some eye pencils as well.  Hopefully I get to have uses for them.  Well, I will find uses for them. hahah…

Meanwhile, Prunk says hi from inside the orange bag I got for free from 4U2:

Delightful orange bear cuteness!

Gisele for Max Factor

Posted by: somethinguncontrived on: September 16, 2008

I am aware that it’s quite late to be posting about this since I have known about this for a couple of weeks now, but I’m just so excited about how the ad campaigns will look like for the Gisele Bundchen/Max Factor collaboration.  I mean look:

+

=

For me that’s just pure awesome genius right there.  I’ll get ready to buy the Max Factor stuff when the campaign comes out :-)   Gisele Bundchen is one of my favorite models and Pat McGrath is absolutely genius.  This partnership is a success in the making.  Can’t wait for how the ads look like.

I am the first to admit that liquid eyeliner is the bane of my makeup artist experience, but evidently something I have to contend with because it is in fact a very useful tool. In fact, it looks so great when applied painstakingly after 12 hours correctly. So I practice, and I still keep practicing. It’s the only key to success, I guess.

When looking for liquid eyeliner, I tend to avoid ones with handles that are too short or bristles that are just too flimsy. In fact, I don’t like those. They may be good for some, but not for me. I yearn for eyeliner pens, ones that will make my life easier in the liquid eyeliner department. In a week’s time, I found myself with two new liquid eyeliners – one was a gift, and one I bought because I had to (for my makeup supplies). These are the 4U2 Liquid Eyeliner and the Cover Girl LineExact liquid eyeliner pen.

4U2 Liquid Eyeliner

Packaging: What I would call typical liquid eyeliner packaging – in a bottle with an adequately long-handled applicator.

Applicator: The applicator looks like a felt tip one, making it quite easy for liquid liner-phobics like me to create fine to thick lines. The handle is long enough, just the right size for my hands to grasp. The felt tip is a welcome surprise since I was counting on it to be a brush, judging from the way it is packaged.

Texture: As far as liquid liners that I have tried, this one is a bit creamier in texture. This is also the reason why it creates a far heavier line than other liners. The thicker texture is also great for those who would like to try liquid liner but are infinitely scared about the goop running to their eyes. If you like more liquid liner, then this is not for you.

Staying Power: Many liquid liners today are water-resistant, just like this one, so if you ever find yourself beneath a rain storm while wearing this eyeliner, I don’t think you have to worry about it streaking onto your cheeks and making you look like some emo chick in the process. Have the bad habit of rubbing your eyes? As long as you don’t rub your eyes too vigorously, your eyeliner application won’t be ruined by that. Just don’t be too overzealous with it or you’ll smudge the heck out of it. It’s safe to say that this eyeliner will stay on until you remove it.

Pros and Cons: I like the thickness of the formula since it gives a really good, solid line and the applicator is my best friend. However, because it is quite thick, I have a bit of a problem with the excess liquid liner collecting on the applicator and on the sides of the bottle. However, just like with mascara, we can always tissue it off.

Price and Availability: It is mid-priced at around P350 more or less and is available from 4U2 counters in selected Watsons outlets (I got mine at SM Makati, and there’s also a 4U2 stand in Watsons SM Mall of Asia).

Cover Girl LineExact Liquid Eyeliner Pen

Packaging: It’s a pen! It’s a little pen, but it’s a pen nonetheless.

Applicator: It works like the pen markers we are familiar with, featuring a pointed felt tip that can make smooth lines.

Texture: This is the more liquid of the two, venturing a little bit on the watery side. Compare the side-by-side swatches of the 4U2 and the Cover Girl:

Because it is creamy, the 4U2 liner goes on dark in one go, while with the Cover Girl liner, you can still see a bit of skin showing thru. The liquid texture allows for buildable coverage, however, and you can make smoother lines than with other liners.

Staying Power: Very good staying power. Water resistant as well. It hurt before my smudging test had any effect, meaning that you would have to rub your eyes with your hands far too hard before you can do anything to the liner.

Pros and Cons: It’s the most convenient thing ever because it comes in pen form and I’m very happy with application and staying power (amazing, I tell you!). However, you have to wait for the line to dry before you can go over it again or you’ll risk somewhat erasing it. And also, I wished they made it bigger, like Sharpie-sized and with more colors. Now that’d be fun.

Price and Availability: This was a gift from a friend, and she got it from the States. I haven’t seen this yet in Cover Girl counters here but just to give you an idea of how much it could sell for here, this liquid eyeliner pen costs about US$5.99.

The Vanity of A Psycho Killer

Posted by: somethinguncontrived on: August 22, 2008

Last night I watched the movie American Psycho for the first time.  The curiosity stemmed from the TDK party posts on Oh No They Didn’t and all the references to Dorsia and what-not.  I thought, let’s download this mofo and I’ll watch it on my laptop.  So I did, and I have the dark circles to prove it (I stayed up till around 2:00 AM for it).

The movie stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street type who kills to satisfy his nightly blood lust, or that’s how I at least try to simplify it.  But anyway, this is not a dissection of the movie’s finer points or an analysis of its social reverberations.  I’m blogging because there’s a part in American Psycho that really caught my attention.  It’s an insight to Patrick Bateman’s vanity:

I live in the American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I’m 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I’ll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

It is, to me, a very curious part of the movie.  Heck, he has a better beauty regimen than I do! It’s kinda weird to say that I learned my beauty routine from a serial killer, fictional or not, but I have to admit that I want to try what he does — and also get more manicures and pedicures in the process as he did.

Patrick Bateman is our killer pretty boy.

The Lips Have It

Posted by: somethinguncontrived on: August 20, 2008

Makeup-wise, I’m not really a lip product girl. I spent most of my time looking at, buying, and testing eye shadows. I do like lip gloss but nothing could compare to my love of eye makeup. I started paying a bit more attention to lipstick and other lip product when I saw the difference it made on one’s face. I, for one, look made up with only red lipstick on. It’s quite amazing how lip makeup can pull a look together.

What color to wear everyday depends on one’s preference. Women in the city where I work usually sport lips in pink and rosy shades, colors that are meant to enhance the natural coloring of the lips. It’s quite foolproof and people are comfortable with it.

Now, what about the colors that women find very difficult to pull off? You may be surprised to know that more than acid pink lips (few women would want to try that out anyway), women are quite scared of doing either red or nude lips. For your reference, this is how my lips look like with just (untinted) lip balm on:

Gnarly, ain’t it? :-p

MAC Upcoming Collection: Suite Array

Posted by: somethinguncontrived on: August 15, 2008

Temptalia.com is one of my favorite sources of upcoming MAC Collections. Being in the third world, I really don’t know when the collections are going to be released here. Last time I went to my local MAC outlet, Neo Sci-Fi just came out. So imagine when this upcoming collection will be seen on Philippine shores.

Suite Array is slated for release in September 25, 2008. I guess I’ll be seeing this collection right before Christmas, am I right? Of all the collections scheduled to come out (Gold Fever, Emanuel Ungaro, etc) this is the one that tickled my fancy because, well, I’m a sucker for eye makeup. I’m a firm believer that one could never have too many eyeshadows or eyeliners or eye makeup brushes. That’s how addicted I am. And for sure, this collection is going to cost more than US retail when it comes to the Philippines. I’m just glad I think I have money to spare when that time comes.

And now without further ado, let me present to you Suite Array:

Pearlglide Eye Liner

  • Wolf Deep grey with gold glitter
  • Rave Deep purple with purple glitter
  • Fly-by-Blu Light blue with blue glitter
  • Black Russian Black with navy blue glitter
  • Miss Fortune Eggplant with light pink glitter
  • Bankroll Rich green with bright green sparkle
  • Spare Change Mid-tone brown with copper glitter
  • Molasses Brown with mid-tone brown glitter

Eyeshadow Suite

  • Ocean 2 Mid-tone blue with silver pearlized pigments / Light blue with silver pearlized pigments
  • Smoke and Ash Black with silver pearlized pigments / Mid-tone grey with silver pearlized pigments
  • Counterparts Deep forest with gold pearlized pigments / Midtone orange with gold pearlized pigments
  • Rose Suites Intense blue pink / Light yellow pink with silver pearlized pigments
  • Shallow v. Deep Bluish green with gold pearlized pigments / Mint with silver
    pearlized pigments
  • Sweet Liason Pale yellow with gold pearlized pigments / Deep brown with gold pearlized pigments
  • Team Violets Dark burgundy with burgundy pearlized pigments / Mid-ton violet with gold pearlized pigments

(photos and descriptions credit)

With these colors and knowing the quality that MAC has, I’m sure I’d have a hard time choosing which shadow to buy. Let’s just hope somebody gifts me with something from this collection. :-)

Welcome to Something Uncontrived

Posted by: somethinguncontrived on: August 14, 2008

WordPress is a semi-new frontier for me. This will probably test my blogging abilities, but I’m just so excited to be writing again.

What is Something Uncontrived?

Something Uncontrived is a beauty, makeup, everything else blog. I chose the name it like so because I want something that will appear effortless to anyone reading it, something accessible and –yes– uncontrived. I have had my share of blogs. In fact, I have a personal blog and a food blog that I write with a couple of boys. Tough luck on having those two boys write about makeup, so I set out on this. I did have a makeup blog that I used to co-write, but I guess that blog is now resting in peace unless one of us resuscitates it.

Anyway, I hope to be of help to your makeup and beauty queries, with a little bit of tech along the way. I hope this works out for the best. Let’s keep this blog uncontrived and easy and fun. :-)

Who Are You?

I write for a living.  I’m a web content writer based in Makati, Philippines.  I like my job — no stress, pays quite well, and I have all the internet that I will ever need.

What’s a Writer Doing Writing a Beauty Blog?

Ah.  The writing gig is my day job.  I moonlight as a makeup artist on weekends and some events and/or shoots.  I love it.  I’m lucky to be doing the two things I love doing most.  No, I did not go to school.  Yes, I plan to go to school eventually.  Call me a writing makeup artist if you want. Hee-hee. :p

And besides, this is not just a beauty blog.  It is so much more than that.  It could be so much more than that.  Let it flow, let it flow.
